Pfeifer & Langen receives SBTi validation for ambitious climate targets

Commitment to 1.5 degree goal officially confirmed

Cologne, 22.07.2025 – Sugar producer Pfeifer & Langen has reached a significant milestone on the road to greater climate protection: The internationally acclaimed Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially validated the company’s climate targets, confirming scientifically that the company’s decarbonisation strategy aligns with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement. For the family company, acting sustainably has always been strategically important and a high priority. As a business that produces food from agricultural products, Pfeifer & Langen operates in harmony with nature and accepts responsibility for both society and the environment.

“We are delighted at this validation and proud of the scientific confirmation of our commitment,” says Uwe Schöneberg, Managing Director of Pfeifer & Langen. “It shows that our climate protection and sustainability efforts are on the right track – hand in hand with agriculture, for our customers, our markets and the environment.”

With clear goals towards a climate-friendly future by 2030

Pfeifer & Langen is committed to reducing both direct emissions from its own production sites and indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 1 and 2) by 42 percent by 2030. Moreover, indirect emissions along the entire value chain (Scope 3) – such as in logistics or the use of products in the processing industry – are to be reduced by 25 percent. Emissions related to agriculture and land use, known as FLAG (forest, land, and agriculture) emissions, are to be reduced by 30 percent by 2030.

All reduction targets refer to the reference year 2022.

Long-term outlook: Net zero by 2050

The strategic goal of the Pfeifer & Langen Sugar Group in Europe is to achieve complete climate neutrality across the entire value chain – known as net zero – by 2050. The SBTi’s validation underlines the commitment and ambition of Pfeifer & Langen’s sustainability strategy. At the same time, it sends a clear signal to partners, customers and the public: For this tradition-rich company, climate protection is more than just a fundamental conviction – it is a guiding component of the company’s future.
