Our beet sugar

Our sugar beet is processed right where it is grown: in Germany and Poland. This means that beet sugar has significantly shorter transport distances within Germany and Poland than alternative products such as coconut blossom sugar and agave syrup, which are imported from tropical or subtropical regions. Our sugar is made from sustainably grown sugar beet (REDcert2 certified). You can find more information on the production and sustainability of beet sugar in our Sweet Science edition, Naturally Sugar.

Once you have it, it lasts a long time: sugar has no best-before date and, if stored correctly, has an unlimited shelf life – an important consideration when it comes to food waste. Our Sweet Science edition, Multitalented Sugar, provides an overview of sugar’s other properties and uses.

What do we use from the beet? Everything! 18 per cent of the beet is processed into sugar. But the beet contains even more resources: we use the water from the beet for production and the remeining materials as animal feed, fertiliser or, in the future, as a source of energy. We supply more than half of our sugar in bulk to our customers, using silo and tanker lorries. However, as packaging is sometimes unavoidable, we focus on recyclable solutions. Since 2023, we have been using FSC-certified packaging from sustainably managed forests for our paper-wrapped retail products. For some products, we go one step further and use packaging made from 20 per cent sugar beet fibre.
