Sustainable regional sugar beet farming

Transformation
needs action

The goal: Sustainable agriculture. Our road to achieving it: Responsible, clear – and above all, shared!

Growing together

Securing the sustainable future of regional sugar beet farming is only possible by working together. We rely on our long-standing, close relationship with agriculture. With a spirit of partnership and responsibility, we are committed to the sustainable cultivation of sugar beets – and working constantly on solutions and technologies to further improve the eco-balance of our beets.

So close. So sustainable!

Short transport routes for the beets: On average, the beet fields are just 50 kilometres away from our factories, fulfilling our promise to produce regionally and keep transport-related CO2 emissions to a minimum.

Our sugar beets are REDcert2 certified – and have been since 2016 – with all relevant economic, ecological, and social aspects being taken into account. We ensure our high standards by regularly auditing our agricultural partners and company sites.

SAI – we’re on board!

Since 2023, we have been a member of the global Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform (SAI Platform). In growing our sugar beets, we rely on regenerative farming practices such as mulch tillage, catch crops, and the precise application of crop protection products and fertilisers. It’s how we protect the environment and preserve resources.

Taking sustainability further

Our beets already fulfil high standards. But we want more: more sustainability and more efficiency – together with the beet farmers. In this process of transformation, we put our expertise to work to support them. Our agriculture department is an established pillar of our sustainability management, providing advice on all aspects of sugar beets – both in person and digitally.

More about our partnership with agriculture

A helping hand for species diversity

Diversity begins in the field. The sugar beet is a rotational crop. For at least three years after harvest, other plants are cultivated, which in turn fosters biodiversity. In addition, the long roots of the sugar beets loosen the soil and improve its fertility. Sugar beet fields are important sources of nutrition and refuge for wildlife, especially birds. But the beets are not the only ones committed to biodiversity – we are, too, with a variety of projects:

Nesting sites for peregrine falcons

We support the growth of the peregrine falcon population around Lage and Jülich. The high silos at our factories make ideal nesting sites.

Always upstream

Together with the town of Lage, we are planning the renovation of a fish ladder on the Werre river, allowing the fish to easily overcome barriers when they migrate.

Eldorado for water birds

At our Könnern site, resting waterfowl have found a habitat at our storage and safety basin. We support the monitoring of these birds.

Power for the bees

Bee colonies need pollen, water, and a constant supply of high-energy food. We offer beekeepers a wide range of bee sugar products.
