Expertise for sugar beet farming

Together through
the beet year

On the fields, farmers are the experts – we support them with our crop advisory team and our Sugar Beet Agricultural Information Service (LIZ: Landwirtschaftlicher Informationsdienst Zuckerrübe).

Stronger together

We are at your side 365 days in the year. With expertise, advice, and service for agricultural operations. On request, our partners receive expert support. At every stage of the beet year – reliable and hands-on.

With the harvest of this year’s crop, initial preparatory work takes place with the appropriate processing of harvest residues, e.g., to prevent “straw mats.” Agricultural lime from the sugar factory helps improve soil fertility.

Ideally, the areas intended to be sown with beet go into winter with a catch crop. Our crop advice and digital tools on LIZ-online.de help you choose the right sugar beet variety and more.

Winter is used for preparation: Reflecting on the past year, exchanging news, and planning the work for the upcoming growing season, which starts in spring.

Now the focus is on planting. Tillage is a vital part of this – along with balanced fertilisation, it gets the young beets off to a good start.

Young beets need protection. Farmers keep weeds and diseases at bay. We provide personal support through our crop advice and a wide range of digital tools. Our field days offer opportunities for dialogue and inspiration.

Now the beet is producing sugar. For this, it needs sufficient rainfall and, most importantly, sunshine during these two hot months. The beet leaves must be kept healthy – our crop advisors and the LIZ advisory tools can help.

September - October

Harvest begins in autumn. Beets are harvested and stored at the edge of the field. Mechanical cleaning takes place during loading, and most beets are transported to the factory by lorry. Beet pulp is returned as valuable stockfeed

November - December

It takes longer to process beets than to harvest them. In late November, therefore, beets stored at the edge of fields are covered with fleece material. This protects them from extreme weather and ensures their quality while they await transport to the factory.

Knowledge connects

Our crop advisors support beet farmers through every stage of the beet year – and bring the expertise of our Sugar Beet Agricultural Information Service (LIZ) to the field. LIZ is our agricultural knowledge factory – and, as a service department, it provides the expertise that our crop advisors then pass on. In this way, we ensure that knowledge is transferred into farming practice, as well as such institutions as the official advisory service, scientific institutes, sugar beet growers’ associations, and many more.
