Sugar consumption is falling – yet obesity continues to rise. Experience from countries such as the UK shows that, despite policy measures such as sugar taxes, the desired impact on public health has not materialized. Obesity is the result of a complex interplay of dietary habits, lifestyle, physical activity and social conditions – looking at individual nutrients in isolation falls short.
We are contributing to the current debate and advocating for fact-based decisions rather than supposed quick fixes. Neither bans nor additional taxes bring about sustainable change – what is crucial is sound nutritional literacy that enables individuals to make practical, everyday choices.
Our clear stance: nutrition needs context.
We have compiled all the background information, data and scientific classifications in a concise one-pager: Sugar Tax
