Passionate and innovative.

Sugar enriches our lives in many ways. It is an important source of energy, sweetens our food and drinks, and preserves food. Our vision is to produce not only classic table sugar, but also to continue developing new natural sugars and specialties. In our quest, we are guided by the idea of manufacture: making good things better – in excellent quality, tailored to the specific needs and desires of our customers, and in close dialog with our customers. We’ve developed several hundred product specifications for the food processing industry alone. Tailored to the exact requirements and applications of our customers. And it’s a task we engage in anew each day.

In our Innovation Center in Elsdorf, for example. Here, we conduct research on new natural sugars from beets—such as the extraction of cellobiose. Today, we’re the first company which is able to produce cellobiose from beet sugar on a large scale. Cellobiose is very similar to lactose, and can even replace it—which makes it highly interesting for the food processing industry.

Specialty sugar in all possible variations.

Our product range in the industrial sector covers all conceivable needs. It ranges from crystal sugar of various grain sizes, liquid sugar, icing sugar, caramel sugar syrups, brown sugar, organic sugar, jelly sugar, caramel colors, fondants, and colored or flavored sugars to many other functional sugars for a wide variety of applications.

The retail product range of the Diamant Zucker and Kölner Zucker brands is as diverse as it is popular. In addition to the well-known sugar specialties, jelly sugar, and candy sugar for the home, the range includes unique dessert products such as Eiszauber (ice magic) and cinnamon sugar.

OUR HISTORY Where we come from and what has shaped us.

It all began in 1870 when the Cologne industrialists Emil Pfeifer, Eugen Langen, and Valentin Pfeifer founded the Pfeifer & Langen company. Our group is still family-owned today. We are guided by entrepreneurship, innovative spirit, and humanity – values that we consider the foundation of a modern, open, and international corporate culture.

Influenced by Cologne Cathedral.

Our home, Cologne, has also shaped our brand image from the very beginning. As the cathedral is the city's landmark, our company logo features two sugar loaves – in the style of the two towers of the cathedral. The packaging of Kölner Zucker and Diamant Zucker is also dominated by the silhouette of the cathedral, which we consider a symbol of tradition and workmanship.

Growing with strong roots.

The reason why Cologne is our home base lies in the fertile countryside that surrounds it. Sugar beet grows particularly well in the Rhineland region. So it’s no surprise that our first sugar refineries – Elsdorf, Euskirchen, Wevelinghoven, and Dormagen – were built just a stone’s throw from the cathedral.
We deliberately increased our production capacities in small steps, for example by expanding our capacities with SZR Lage, in Appeldorn, or by acquiring Lippe-Weser-Zucker AG. In 1993 we built our sugar refineries in Könnern in eastern Germany, making
Pfeifer & Langen a national sugar producer. This was followed by our European expansion, first in France, then in Poland, and later in the Ukraine. Today the Pfeifer & Langen Group has production sites, refineries, and sales offices in ten countries: in Germany, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Hungary. Our locations are a commitment to Europe, as this is where we see our future.

QUALITYWhat quality work means for us.

Our benchmark is quality, and we certainly measure up. We meet the following German and European standards:

  • ISO/FSSC 22000 as food safety certifications for the processing industry
  • IFS Food 6 (International Featured Standards Food) for the food retail sector, which have also been reviewed in unannounced audits
  • QA (quality assurance) and GMP+ (combination of the fundamentals of Good Manufacturing Practice according to the principles of the HACCP concept) for the feed sector.

Our customer and certification audits are regularly and consistently concluded with positive results at all locations.

SUSTAINABILITYBecause we are committed to nature.

Sugar beet is our raw material and is processed to almost 100 percent – right down to the water it contains. Not surprisingly, sustainability has a long tradition in our family business.
Sustainability, and with it the preservation and protection of natural resources, the promotion of efficient processing methods, and social responsibility are among our key corporate goals.

Sustainable sugar beet farming:

Our proprietary Agricultural Information Service (LIZ) was established over 25 years ago. It allows us to develop a comprehensive consulting concept with individual and personal advice on site.

Sustainable production:

Modern, environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies, some of which we have developed ourselves, are used for sugar production and refining at our plants. Our research and development will continue to work towards further improving our processes and products in the future.

Sustainable usage:

During the production process, we can utilize almost all of the sugar beet and use it to market sugar, valuable straight feed, and molasses.

Sustainable mobility:

We also act sustainably when it comes to transporting and unloading sugar. Our own fleet exclusively transports our most important good: sugar. This ensures that there is no mixing with other foods, therefore guaranteeing quality. And if you wish, when our trucks arrive at your premises to unload the sugar, they can switch from diesel operation to electric discharge, making it the process both environmentally and food-friendly.

A sustainable approach for our employees:

Since the success of Pfeifer & Langen is based not least on the performance and commitment of our workforce, we are also making sustained efforts here to ensure the best possible working environment and occupational health and safety conditions. In addition, all employees in our company are committed to interacting with one another in a respectful and friendly manner.

Pfeifer & Langen takes its responsibility for sustainability seriously. For one, because we want to set the tone for our economic and ecological future, and ensure our partners are satisfied. And, above all, because we are directly connected to the environment through our work and our products, and we bear a special responsibility for it.

COMPLIANCEWhat confidence means for you.

As a traditional family business and leading European sugar manufacturer, we care deeply about the trust the public, our customers, and our employees put in us. It is the basis for our daily actions, and we are aware of our responsibility as a food-producing company. Two years ago, a comprehensive compliance program was initiated for the entire Pfeifer & Langen Group. In the process, a code of conduct was set out and firmly established within the company. The conduct of each individual employee is governed by the law and regulations as well as by ethical principles stipulated by Pfeifer & Langen itself, such as transparency and responsibility – values that shape our interactions.
As a member of the global online platform SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange), Pfeifer & Langen also demonstrates that the principles of ethical and social sustainability are respected and a top priority for us.

CAREERSWhat we do for our future.

Our company’s success is, above all, down to our people. That is why personnel development has been an essential component of our human resources work for years. New employees are specifically trained in their tasks by participating in tailor-made seminars. We also support their continuous development within the company through targeted further training activities.

A major concern of our human resources development program is to give priority to our own employees when it comes to existing opportunities for advancement and growth. Our company’s flat hierarchies guarantee a varied and challenging range of activities with short decision paths. As a European manufacturing company in the food industry, we offer exciting jobs, international work, and attractive opportunities in a multinational group of companies.
